Cards Wars: Hybridous gameplay

Do you remember “Alice in Wonderland”? The massive marching armies of playing cards? It seems to be interesting to command such an army in a computer game, doesn’t it?

If your answer is positive, you’ll surely like Cards Wars, recently released turn-based strategy. It features playing cards as soldiers. They fight for control over the provinces, like in Risk. But the game has a few extra dimensions, providing the unique experience for the player.

The battles between the decks of cards are held in the manner of the card game War. But there are two adjustments which add extra depth to the gameplay.

First, the defeated card is destroyed completely and the victorious one looses one point of its value. So, the army will suffer from attrition even if it is marching victoriously through the enemy lands.

Second, you don’t have to destroy all the defenders to capture the province. The battle is over when one of the sides looses 50% of its cards. The remaining cards retreat. More than that: if you manage to surround the enemy army and kill a half of the defenders, the rest of them will simply vanish. All this opens vast field for tactical decisions.

The more battles you win, the more experience points you earn. You can spend them to activate various powerups. Some of the powerups increase your cards’ fighting strength, another lets you see all the enemies or even jump over a province. If applied in the proper moment, the powerup can dramatically change the balance on the map.

Besides tactics, the game requires the strategical thinking, as there can be up to 10 players on a map and each of them wants to be the winner. Sometimes it could be wise to stop attacking your worst enemy to prevent another player from gaining too much power.

The wars of cards take place on the maps of Earth, Europe, America and so on, as well as on the random maps. You can play with the computer players or with your friends in the Hotseat Multiplayer mode. As you complete the scenarios or perform special tasks, you receive medals. For example, there are medals for activating 5 powerups during one turn or for viewing game history. The more medals you have, the higher your rank is, and the more scenarios become available.
