Bubble Tanks 2: warfare at micro-scale

Changing the scale of the ordinary objects and phenomena is the popular way in game-design to create an innovative and easy-to-learn game. This technique was used by Jared Riley and Eric Ottati (Hero Interactive) when they created Bubble Tanks. Later, after considering tons of players’ comments, they released Bubble Tanks 2, where, compared to the first version, multiple interface tweaks were made, various tanks and weapons were added.

The Bubble Tanks Series depicts the wars in the micro-scaled world. This world is inhabited by militant tank-like creatures, which consist of bubbles. The world itself is a grid of bigger bubbles and you can travel from one of them to another by moving through the membrane. You can strike the enemies with (guess, what? Right!) bubbles, of course! :) Being destroyed, they break into even smaller bubbles, which you can collect and upgrade your tank.

There are several different upgrade branches, which provide unique weapons and tactics. For the first upgrage you should select if you like to plays as either a fighter tank or a heavy tank, or develop in a balansed way. Personally, I liked the first, but sometimes select the second or the third branch. Being a fighter you receive a fast-shooting veapon but your main defense is your speed and manouverability. As a heavy tank, you get a long-to-reload but heavily-hitting weapon, some kind of shield, but loose speed. And, as it is understandable from the name, balansed way of development keeps some features from either side.

You can upgrade your tank up to 5 times. On the higher levels the fighter tanks receive a fan-shooting gun of 3, then 5 bullets, and heavy tanks get multiple towers and increased bullet power. Balansed way of development will divide into Balansed Heavy and Balansed Fighter, becoming close by its characteristics to one of those classes.

Other classes open then, like Sniper tank. Its gun takes long time to reload, but a bullet flies fast and has a high penetrating power. The max level Sniper is Ghost Sniper and has a secondary ability of Disassemble: when you press space it will turn into a cloud of bubbles, and enemous bullets will go throught it doing no harm.

There are also such kinds of tanks, as a Leecher Tank, which sucks life from the enemies an can infect them with virus bubbles, a Drone tank, which sends drones to attack enemies, and BFT (I assume,this abbreviation is like Quake’s gun BFG ).

Soon after you evolve to the 5th level, you’ll encounter the big boss. First it looks like a catterpillar, which crawls around a bubble, then it unfolds and forms 4 heavy-to-destroy towers inside it. But for a 5th-level tank it is not hard to cope with them.



Control are, as usual, W, A, S, D to move your tank. Use mouse to rotate it and fire, and when the secondary weapon is available, you can use it by pressing Space. Pressing P will pause the game and open the menu. There the map is available. Keep in mind, that the further you are from the initial bubble, the more dangerous enemies will appear.
The sound is unobtrusive and quite-well adds to the microworld setting.
